Can single women travelling to the UAE as tourists get visas?

Yes, they can obtain a 30-day tourist visa, renewable only once for a similar period. They must be sponsored by hotels, or tourist agencies.

Regarding transit visas, what are the rules? Should a passenger transiting through the UAE apply for a 96-hour transit visa once he arrives in Dubai or should he do that before he begins the journey? For instance, my friend wants to visit me while travelling from the US to India. She has one day in hand and wants to apply for a transit visa for Dubai in September. How can she do that? The Emirates office in the US tells her they cannot help her with a transit visa because her return ticket was issued from India. So basically, what are the rules?

A transit visa is issued to travellers transiting through UAE airports. It is issued for 96 hours and must be sponsored by an airline operating in the UAE. The visitor must have a valid ticket for an onward flight. It must be arranged by the airline as the traveller books the ticket. There is a charge.

Does the new rule also have two options for a visa change: either the person has to exit for a visa change or pay the fee to process the visa change while inside the UAE?

Yes, a visit visa may still be converted to a work visa, but residency departments may decide otherwise to prevent misuse of this facility. Applicants may be asked to go back to their home country and wait for a work visa, which will be authorized by the Ministry of Labor. Tourist Visa holder is not allowed to change status inside country. He must exit and enter again.

If someone lives in the UK, and their daughter lives in Dubai and is having a baby, and he along with his spouse is coming on holiday at this time, is a visa required?

Britons are among people from 34 countries who are allowed to obtain a visa on arrival free of charge. The visa will be for 30 days and can be renewed for a similar period. If you are not British, your daughter can still sponsor you on a 30-day or 90-day visit visa.

Medical insurance for visitors: Who and where do they have to get medical insurance and for how many months. Is it from the date of application or from the date of arrival?

Visitors to the UAE on all types of visas must obtain health insurance for the entire period of their visit. This insurance can be obtained from companies operating in the UAE or abroad.

My sister and her family (Indian nationals) are transiting through the UAE in November. They will be on a transit visa. They will leave the UAE within 24 hours. They would like to come back to the UAE on a visit visa within 15 days. Is there any difficulty in this? Is it allowed?

No, the visa can be obtained any time provided that a valid reason is given.

What will happen if somebody wants to renew a visit visa?

Visit visas for 30 days or 90 days will no longer be renewed. Visitors have to leave for their country and may come back on another visa after 30 days if they meet requirements. What happened to the Mission visa? Is it still available? Yes, it is unchanged.??Will I need to pay a deposit for a visit visa for blood relatives? Yes, a refundable deposit is applicable for blood relatives, and for distant relative and friends. Who pays and who doesn't pay for visit visas/visa on arrival? Exempt countries are Britain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, Finland, Malta, Spain, Monaco, Vatican, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Frequently Asked Question
Q: My son is under my sponsorship. He will be 18 on February 10. His visa expires on April 10. I would like to ask you whether I can renew his residence visa.
He is taking his board exam on April 25, here in Dubai. Do I need to cancel his visa?
A: You will not have any problem with regards to your son's residence visa. In relation to the visa which expires in February, your son has 30 days after the expiry, and when the period of 30 days has lapsed, a new visa may be made for your son if he continues his education within the UAE, and in this event, the new visa will be only for one year to be renewed annually.

The residency laws of the UAE allows expatriate parents to sponsor their sons as long as they are less than 18 years old.
Parents can sponsor an 18-year-old son only If he studies in the country.
The laws are different for a daughter and the parents can sponsor her beyond 18 years of age. The parents can sponsor her if she is a divorcee or if she becomes a widow. Her residency visa will be valid for three years.
The situation is different if it is a son and if he reaches 18, the parents cannot sponsor him anymore.
The residency laws give the parents only one OPTION in order to keep their 18-year-old son with them here.

  • A deposit of must be made at the naturalization and Residency Dept. if he is studying in the UAE at an educational institution which is not an accredited institution or one which is not approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. There is no need for a deposit if the educational institution or the university where the son is studying is an accredited one.
  • Similarly, if the sponsored son who is less than 18 and is studying abroad, the parents must deposit payment, which is refundable, to retain the residency visa.
  • The residency visa for the 18-year-old son is valid only for one year and should be renewed every year. In order to obtain a residency visa the son should submit to the residency department a letter from the educational institution which states that he is studying there.

Abu Dhabi: All applications for visas for the United Kingdom made in the UAE must be PAID FOR ONLINE by credit or debit card, before submission at the visa application centres in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi said in a statement.

The new regulation came into effect as part of a new system of the UK Border Agency. The agency is in the process of moving to an online application and payment system where almost all customers will apply and pay for their visas online.

Visa fees should be paid in US Dollars by Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. Payment using other types of credit or debit cards or in other CURRENCY cannot be accepted.

When the online payment has been taken, the visa applicant will receive a confirmation email as proof of payment which should be taken to the visa application centre on the day of appointment.

Applicants now arrange appointments at their own convenience and experience reduced waiting times at the visa application centres. The facility to MAKE ONLINE payments will further enhance this service and is consistent with a wider global trend towards online transactions and payments.

Worker gets 30-day grace period after visa cancellation

Q: I came to Dubai on an employment visa in December 2011. However, the company I signed up for was not particularly to my liking and so I told them to cancel my visa. However, I have not been for a medical examination in this time, and the visa too was never stamped on my passport. My questions are; 1. How many days can I stay in the UAE after cancellation of my visa? 2. Shall I attract a one-year ban? 3. Is there any chance to come back on an employment visa after exiting the country in case the Ministry of Labour places a ban on me? Note that I had not started working at the company.

A: The questioner may stay in the country for 30 days after cancellation of his visa. A one-year ban might be imposed if the sponsor has made such a request on the grounds that the questioner has not started work with the company and thus caused a loss to the sponsor. Therefore, in the event of a ban being imposed on the questioner, the questioner may not enter the country on employment visa immediately, but only after finishing the ban (GN).

No bar on having visas of other countries

Q: I have a Dubai employment visa. Can I also have a Kuwaiti employment visa? Is it permitted to have employment visas of two countries on the same passport at the same time? Should I cancel my UAE visa to take up a job in Kuwait?

A: Federal law No. 6 for the year 1973 has not excluded holders of other countries' residency visas from entering the UAE. The laws in the UAE are enacted with the knowledge that many of its residents may need to reside in more than one country. Hence, there is no conflict of interest in having more than one residency visa on a person's passport.

NOTE: You cannot get Saudi and Qatar visa if you have other GCC country's visa on your passport.

As per the new rule, employment visa transfer has been stopped. If the employee resigns before the completion of two years, a six-month ban shall be imposed. But the same may be lifted without any charges or NOC from the employer if the employee managed to get a new job opportunity, taking into account that the salary of such worker with the new company shall be in accordance with the skill level specified by the Ministry of Labour:

1- First skill level: which means that if the employee is having university degree and above, his salary with the new company shall not be less than Dh12,000.

2- Second skill level: if the employee is having diploma, his salary with the new company shall not be less than Dh7,000.

3- Third skill level: if the employee is having high school degree, his salary with the new company shall not be less than Dh5,000.

If these three skills have not been met by the employee, he may not lift the ban and he shall wait until the completion of the ban period and then he may work with a new sponsor, moreover, the NOC from the earlier sponsor has no effect based on the Ministry of Labour’s new decisions.

Above mentioned salary can be in total. It is not necessary to put as basic salary. New profession must be compatible with educational certificate. For secondary certificate holder, the new profession code shall end with 0000003.
